Book cover of Matinee by Stephen G. Kirk

All is quiet in the small rural town of Clear Water. Sixteen-year-old Tim Martin spends this summer working along with other kids at the aging Madison Theater, a fading landmark that still draws crowds for Saturday matinees and late-night films. But beneath the smell of buttered popcorn and the theater’s thread-worn red carpets and dim lights lies a dark, foreboding basement.

When a routine plumbing repair breaches something buried far below the theater’s foundation, an ancient presence awakens—something sealed away centuries ago by desperate hands and sacred words. Soon, strange events ripple through the town: tempers flare, pets vanish, violent storms arrive without warning, and an uneasy feeling that something may be watching settles over a small community that begins to learn the meaning of fear.

As an unspeakable darkness stirs beneath the Madison, Tim and the townspeople must confront a terror older than memory itself—one that has waited patiently over centuries to rise, and does so again.
